Skin protection is vital to your overall health, and the choices that you make during the summer (and year-round) can affect your health and wellness for years to come. Did you take the proper precautions to protect your skin this past summer? Read on to find out!
Did You Remember Sunscreen?
Everyone knows that the most basic sun protection tip when it comes to your skin is wearing sunscreen, but did you know that you should be wearing sunscreen every day? The sun’s harmful rays can affect you whether you’re on or off the beach, and even on cloudy days. All that time you spent in the sun adds up, so wearing sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF every day is absolutely essential to protecting your skin. You should always remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweating when some of it may have worn off.
Did You Wear Protective Clothing?
Most people don’t think about covering up in the summer. However, even if your wardrobe consisted of bathing suits and shorts, you should have been conscious of the ways that you could have protected your skin with clothing. Did you cover your arms and legs? If not, you should have! Covering your arms and legs whenever possible is benefical towards protecting your skin from the summer rays. Hats are also a great way to protect your face and scalp from the sun, as well as sunglasses. The more skin covered, the better! Did you know clothing also makes a difference when it comes to skin protection? Bright or dark colored fabrics (that are densely woven) can actually absorb UV rays and help protect your skin from the sun. Keep that tip in mind next summer when you’re heading out to the beach.
Did You Seek the Shade?
Being aware of when the sun’s rays are most dangerous is essential to skin proctection. It’s best to seek shade and to avoid the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM, since those are the hours in which the sun is most intense. Staying in the shade whenever possible, whether you’re under an umbrella or a tree will be benefical to your skin and help protect you from sunburn. Be sure to remember that even when you’re in the shade, sunscreen is still necessary.
Did You Stay Hydrated?
Did you stay hydrated this summer? If so, you worked towards protecting your skin. Drinking a plentiful amount of water each day helps hydrates the skin, allowing it to remain flexible. If your skin was dehydrated in the summer, your skin was most likely not protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Hydration does much more than simply keep you feeling refreshed, it can be yet another line of defense against skin damage from the sun. Remember to drink plenty of water next summer!
