What is SPF – Sun Protection Factor?
SPF – Sun Protection Factor is a number on a scale that provides us with a measure to rate the effectiveness of sunscreen.

How does SPF work? The SPF rating is calculated by comparing the time needed to burn protected skin versus the time needed to burn unprotected skin.

Example: If Jacob turns red after 10 minutes, then this is his initial burn time. Now if Jacob uses a sunscreen with SPF15 i.e. 15 x 10 = 150 minutes (2 hours, 30 minutes).

What is Initial Burn Time? Initial burn time is individual. Therefore, SPF is a useful guide to understand how much protection it provides, but not an absolute measure. Sunscreen with SPF of 15, or higher are generally thought to provide useful protection from the sun’s harmful rays. The higher the SPF number, the greater the degree of protection.

SPF 10: 90.0 %      SPF 20: 95.0 %      SPF 30: 96.7 %      SPF 60: 98.3 %

The protective compound of sunscreen is either an organic chemical that absorbs UV light, or an opaque material that reflects light. The best sunscreen in fact blocks UVB ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength between 315 and 280 nm which can cause sunburn, and UVA (380-315 nm) which damages the skin without causing sunburn (most responsible for the premature aging of skin).
